The first known build of Windows 7 was identified as a “Milestone 1 (M1) code drop” with a version number of 6.1.6519.1. It was sent to key Microsoft partners by January 2008 in both x86 and x64 versions. Though not yet commented on by Microsoft, reviews and screenshots have been published by various sources. The M1 code drop installation requires Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, and creates a dual-boot system with Windows Vista.
Microsoft introducing MinWin into its latest version of windows, developed for use in Windows 7. The MinWin development efforts are aimed towards componentizing the Windows kernel and reducing the dependencies with a view to carving out the minimal set of components required to build a self-contained kernel as well as reducing the disk footprint and memory usage. It takes up about 25 MB on disk and has a working set of 40 MB. It lacks a graphical user interface and is interfaced using a full-screen command line interface. It includes the I/O and networking subsystems.
Improvements over its NTFS brought to an introduction of WinFS into Windows 7. WinFs or Windows Future Storage is the code name for a data storage and management system based on relational databases, developed by Microsoft and first demonstrated in 2003 as an advanced storage subsystem for the Microsoft Windows operating system, being designed for persistence and management of structured, semi-structured as well as unstructured data. WinFS includes a relational database for storage of information, and allows any type of information to be stored in it, provided there is a well defined schema for the type. Individual data items could then be related together by relationships, which are either inferred by the system based on certain attributes or explicitly stated by the user.
PowerShell is also integrated within Windows 7, Windows PowerShell is an extensible command line interface shell and associated scripting language from Microsoft. It was released in 2006 and is currently available for Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and is built into Windows Server 2008 as an optional feature.
Overall windows 7 more or less looks and feels like windows vista.
Microsoft has released the first public beta of Internet Explorer 8 for download by willing testers, which debuted this week at the Mix conference in Las Vegas. Microsoft finally start to put the next generation of the browser wars into focus with a new version of IE to compare with the recent betas of Mozilla’s forthcoming Firefox 3.
Beta 1 of IE 8 is definitely developer-oriented, Microsoft accurately describes as a developer beta, meaning that regular users should probably stay away from it which are typically focused on helping Web developers code to the new HTML engine in the browser.
Among some of the new features in Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 are WebSlices and Activities. Activities works in a similar way to some Firefox extensions, and it even opens to third-party developers in the same way. Activities can be accessed by highlighting text and right-clicking, or in some pages, once text is highlighted, a small symbol appears over the text that when clicked pops open an Activities window. nice thing about the way Activities is implemented is that it launches in a small window directly from the menu, rather than launching an entirely new Web site.
WebSlices feature provides an extended way for Web site developers to make it possible for visitors to extend site content into their browsing experiences. If a developer has enabled WebSlices in a site, IE 8 will detect it in much the same way that current browsers detect RSS feeds.
With the new Safety Filter replacing the old phishing filter, which users can choose to turn on or off, looks to see if a site is known as a phishing or malware site, and users can also report sites they suspect of being malicious. If the filter is turned on then Web site information will be sent to Microsoft servers. There were a couple of other small security enhancements in IE 8 Beta 1, including an altered browser address bar that now shows the core domain of the Web site URL in bold, with the idea being that it may be easier for users to detect fake sites that play games with domain names similar to legitimate sites.

Star gazing can be fun, but in the age of Wikipedia and ubiquitous web access, reading from a star chart is a little, well, old fashioned. Enter mySky, a point-and-shoot astronomy device from Meade. Just aim the gun shaped handset at the celestial body of your choice and pull the trigger. Using GPS and accelerometers to determine what you are looking at, the mySpy pulls the information out of a 30,000 object database (upgradeable via SD card). The mySky then delivers video, audio descriptions and “Fun Facts”. There is a guided tour mode, pointing you at galaxies and stars of interest.
The MySky also works in concert with any computer controlled Meade telescope, meaning it becomes the perfect companion for serious astronomers who want to interface and point their telescopes simply by raising their arm in the right direction. There are real-time color maps of the night sky, over 500 audio descriptions with more information on what you’re looking at, incredible photographs of distant celestial objects which you can view from it’s color LCD screen (another option that other handhelds haven’t had), 256 MB RAM (expandable) an SD card slot, and even a long-lasting 7-hour rechargeable battery.
This is obviously going to be best for kids, but I can see some use in it for regular astronomers, if just for identification. The box also hooks up to other Meade telescopes and will guide them automatically. The My Sky has a competitive price of $399.00, but Meade is currently running a deal where if you buy their Meade ETX-90 or ETX-125 with a mySKY™ you’ll qualify for a $200 mail-in rebate.
