Must OR Must Not Have Ubuntu Apps

I’ve been playing around with ubuntu for these few days. I installed ubuntu on my desktop 2 years ago but decided to get it removed esspecially when people around you demand the window’ish environment to be back on the desktop and windows xp it is. I received my 2 cds of ubuntu and kubuntu and got it running immediately. This time I did the dual boot(just to be fair with my sibling).

Ubuntu latest release, I must admit is a total kickass operating system. You got almost everything figure out for you. Pop in the cd answer some simple question and there you have it. Almost to perfection operating system with the cost of nothing.

But not everything runs as you planned, I love bitcomet as my torrent client, but bitcomet was not ported to any linux distro yet. I jump into the ubuntu chat channel, asking around the best application for my torrent need. Most of them recommended Azureus, but in case if you dont know, Azureus is a cpu hogging application and really can slow down your computer dramaticly. Dont blame the application, blame on the platform it was use to develop Azureus. Yes its java and that’s no secret. Kind of tricky and full of dilemma but I choose not to change anything when I found out that Transmission works great when it comes to torrent download(Trust me!).

My next step is of course not just me but also for everybody who loves mp3 in this world. Finding application to replace winamp in ubuntu is not that hard at all. In my last intercourse with mp3 player apps, I’ve pick xmms as the best mp3 player of all. But not this time, all just because of the simplicity that Amarok offers. Compared to xmms, Amarok does not requires you to wonders from forum to forum just to download winamp preset and to install it into xmms to make it work and sound like winamp. That’s what we call the ease of use.

To make life easier, my all time favorite movie player, VLC luckily was ported to linux and I got no comment on it. It works perfect on windows and it does the same on ubuntu, thumbs up for VLC.

I’m kind addicted to instant messaging, by default ubuntu is preloaded with pidgin as the multi network instant messaging client. Yes we missed the yahoo messengger, irreplaceable. Yahoo Messenger was ported to linux but it was poorly built and could hardly compile on Hardy. Pidgin works great, but I prefer Kopete on my desktop. I first saw Kopete in action for the first time when I loaded my office computer with Kubuntu. Only one word to describe it, beautiful.

No doubt image viewer apps plays quite an important role in our daily routine. As in windows I pretty much like irfanview to view all the pictures. Ubuntu as by default comes with the eyes of gnome, which is is the official image viewer for the GNOME Desktop environment. With it, you can view single image files, as well as large image collections. I tried to work around with the eyes of gnome but it turns out it is only good to just what it claims to be, to view images. It would be nice if you could do some simple image editing.

Open office is not that bad after all it does everything that microsoft office can, except it just dont look and feel like one. When you’ve been too long with Microsoft apps you find it quite hard to leave it untouchables. But hey! what you expect from the free apps? But we should put more appreciation to all the the programmers all over the world for their hardwork.

Overall Hardy and the rest of the free bundled apps works great. How about you guys, what will it be? ready to switch to linux? You might want to give it a try and you can always get it removed whenever you like. Cant find the windows software in linux after exhausted all your search effort? Maybe you just can run the program in linux with wine. You decide.
