TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume. On-the-fly encryption means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile or correct encryption keys.

It creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk and encrypts entire partition or storage devicesuch as USB flash drive or hard drive. Drives where Windows is installed also can be encrypted with pre-boot authentication which means that anyone who wants to gain access and use the encrypted system, read and write files stored on the system drive, will need to enter the correct password each time before Windows starts. Pre-boot authentication is handled by the TrueCrypt Boot Loader, which resides in the first cylinder of the boot drive.

System encryption provides the highest level of security and privacy, because all files, including any temporary files that Windows and applications create on the system partition are always permanently encrypted even when power supply is suddenly interrupted. Windows also records large amounts of potentially sensitive data, such as the names and locations of files you open, applications you run, etc. All such log files and registry entries are always permanently encrypted as well.

TrueCrypt volumes can be encrypted using the following algorithms aes,serpent,twofish,aes-twofish, and even with combination of aes-twofish-serpent for the paranoid ones. rueCrypt never saves any decrypted data to a disk – it only stores them temporarily in RAM (memory). Even when the volume is mounted, data stored in the volume is still encrypted. When you restart Windows or turn off your computer, the volume will be dismounted and files stored in it will be inaccessible (encrypted). To make them accessible again, you have to mount the volume and provide the correct password or keyfile.

I installed TrueCrypt on my laptop and ran some benchmark tests.

    Benchmark Results:
    http://www.full-disk-encryption.net/wiki/index.php/TrueCrypt#Benchmarks

    Pros:
    1) Easy to use product. Simple clean interface. Very user-friendly!
    2) Free and Open Source
    3) Multiple Encryption and Hashing algorithm available.

    Cons:
    1) Buffered Read and Buffered Transfer Rate were almost halved after TrueCrypt FDE was enabled :-(.
    2) Access Time for large file (250 MB) increased by 11%.
    3) The initial encryption of the 120 GB HDD took 2 hours.
