Ubuntu 7.10 - Gutsy Gibbon

Canonical Ltd. announced availability of Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition, further improving the desktop Linux experience. Ubuntu 7.10 is available for free download started on Thursday 18 October.

Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition adds an enhanced user interface, improved hardware support, multiple monitor support and integrated desktop search.Hardware management has improved plug-and-play configuration for printers, as well as automatic firmware installation for Broadcom card and laptop users get full support external VGA. Gutsy Gibbon included the ability to manage multiple monitors.



Now dual partition users can read from and and write to files that are on located in a Windows partition (including NTFS). Desktop search gives users the ability to search their entire desktop, whether for files, folders, chat logs or photos. This capability includes the deskbar applet, a central location on users’ desktops for all local and web search operations. For safer safer web-browsing experience, Firefox comes with automatic installation of popular Firefox plugins validated by Ubuntu.

Server edition gets enhanced security which protects the server from intrusion, AppArmor allow Administrators to easily lock down programs and resources and add policies for their specific requirements. Kernel was altered to optimized for use in virtualized environments. Smaller and simpler kernel is particularly suited for virtual appliances and includes many many improvements for paravirtualization, one of which is VMI (Virtual Machine Interface), a new independent way for hypervisors to relate to the kernel. New idle mode introduced resulting in significant energy and cost savings on machines running several virtualised instances.

Cons :
After a week Gutsy Gibbon launched, reports saying that Ubuntu failed to go online because of issues with IPv6 implementation and DHCP-handling. Users have also experienced hardware support issues with the upgrade complaining that the latest version is less compatible than its predecessor.
