Well I got the chance to try myself YouOS web desktop operating system and what I can say is WebShaka did a hell of a job. YouOS is an experimental web desktop produced by WebShaka, that replicates the desktop environment of a modern operating system on a webpage, using JavaScript to communicate with the remote server. This allows users to save the current desktop state to return to later, much like the hibernation feature in many true operating systems, and for multiple users to collaborate using a single environment. YouOS features built-in sharing of music, documents and other files.

WebShaka has also created API(Application Programming Interface) for YouOs and Over 700 applications have been created using this API. WebShaka developed a list of YouOS Application for YouOS users :

Watching to the list application for YouOS it seems that it is almost like a normal desktop operating system. With the same basic concept used in Windows Operating System, YouOS also have its own Add/Remove panel, here you can add and remove programs that you wish to appear in your YouOS Webtop. You can also decide to use default wallpaper or change it to other wallpaper in with just the right click of your mouse(feels like windows heh?).

Every application runs with minimize,maximize and close button and the best part is you got yourself a taskbar and moving from application to application is a breeze. Every desktop Operating System(windows,linux and etc,) comes with its own command line shell and it goes the same for YouOS, YouShell wont make you feel lost, try “help” and you’ll see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Like any other operating system, files management is the most important tool and YouFiles serve the same thing in YouOS. It looks and feels like windows explorer(it does!) and that is just part of application that you can see in YouOS.

However YouOS has its own limitation, YouOS is limited by what the browser can do and for instance, YouOS cannot do 3D graphics very easily, as browsers do not natively support it. YouOS also have limited access to mouse and keyboard controls. YouOS cannot open sockets to arbitrary servers. Thus, YouOS does not have the full functionality of a desktop application. As browsers become increasingly more powerful, the power of the YouOS desktop will increase with it.

You can try YouOS and tell the different, if you do not wish to register an account, you can try the “demo”. Be patient and wait for it to load, its quite slow loading depends on your pc performance. It should load faster on faster pc and just bear with it, it was built heavily with java
