Child Killer Freed
Published July 27th, 2007 in Just My10senYesterday news on News Straits Times is truly unbelievable when someone convict to a murder is freed just like that because Section 97 of the Child Act allow minors to walk free after committing murder. Liew Mei Fong, the victim was stabbed and slashed 24 times by the killer and then left bleeding in the bathroom on the ground floor of the house.
It all started when the murderer who was then 13 years old arrived at liews house earlier for home tuition, snapped when the victim, tuition teacher’s daughter start to call him Fatty! Fatty! Fatty. The murderer followed the victim to the kitchen and grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed her. The suspect then locked the house and left the scene with his uncle, whom he had contacted. He told his uncle that there was no tuition that day and asked him to take him home.
That was on May 31 2002, now after four years kept away from the community, he was freed simply because current laws does not know what to do with the minor who commit murder. Karpal Singh in his statement
the decision by the Court of Appeal in this case showed that judicial power is still in the hands of the judiciary and that has far reaching implications. He said minors should be placed at the pleasure of the court with the board of justices making recommendations every year.
