Ping Ping Ping

What is ping?

Ping is one of the old and famous network tool that serve none other than to generate response from the computer. The other computer responds with an acknowledgment that it received the packets sent. By Pinging the computer, you can check if the computer exists, connected or not connected to the network.  By analyzing the response received you can tell how strong the network connection is on the other side.  Sometimes pinging computer might not be answered due to few causes, most highly the computer is down or the whole network is down.

ping is actually an acronym for Packet Internet (or Inter-Network) Groper.  Pinging a computer is similar to a concepts used in submarines.  Submarines sends sonar to locate each other(remember “comm sonar!” in U-547). When the first sonar sends, the other submarines who received the sonar bounces back the signal to let them know that the target is there.  These concepts applied in computers systems and networks.

Ping is built into almost every network-capable operating system. To ping a computer, go to a command prompt and enter ping , a space, and then the network or Internet address you wish to contact. For example, enter the following at a Windows XP command prompt in this case we are pinging my10sen.com ping my10sen.com You should get a response similar to this:

Try analyze TTL value, Time-to-live (TTL) is a value in an Internet Protocol (IP) packet that tells a network router whether or not the packet has been in the network too long and should be discarded in given period of time.
